Garbled error code June 23, 2010 Ronald Scrabeck (Harmony, Minnesota United States) Lasted about 1 1/2 years with low usage. The display now has a partial error code displayed. Always stored in a dry area, so it didnt get wet at any time.
Bought it to carry in my motorhome May 7, 2010 One Lucky Camper (Oregon, USA) I was camping in my RV, and plugged in to the campground 120-volt AC power. I didn't realize the converter charger in my RV had gone bad. The converter charger transforms 120-volt AC power to 12-volt DC power and charges the coach batteries. All the interior lights, the water pump, and the furnace fan run on 12-volts from the coach batteries. After about three days of heavy use both deep cycle coach batteries were too dead to even turn on a light. I borrowed a battery charger from another camper. It was a Black and Decker 25/10/2 Amp smart charger. I hooked it up across both coach batteries, and used it like that for the next two days. It immediately allowed us to have lights, water, and heat, charging at 25 amps. By the morning of the next day it was only charging at 10 amps. Being "smart" it must have realized the batteries now only needed 10 amp maintenance for what we were using. Both batteries are now fine, and still being used. (I replaced the converter charger as soon as I got home) I also bought a B&D 25/10/2 Amp smart charger to carry in my RV. For myself, if I ever need one again, and to "pay it forward" if someone else ever has a battery problem. Couldn't find that particular model in any stores so I went online and the best price was at Amazon. I haven't even used my new battery charger yet, but I'm sure glad I have it, and if/when it's needed, I know it will do the job. Sorry for the long winded story, but I hate reviews that just say "great battery charger".
Well-designed, but poor quality. Failed March 25, 2010 Barthbill (lowse ahnhaylayse) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This would be a five star review if the thing kept working. I loved it and found all the features useful and effective.
Alas, it was not to be. The first one failed, and the dealer would not help me, so I sent it back to BD. They sent me a refurb which was intermittent, so back it went. 2 months later, I got another refurb from them. So far, so good. Maybe the third time will be the charm.
Crap March 3, 2010 Bronson Dietrich (Williamsburg, Ohio United States) I had this same exact one in the vector name. This is a total piece of crap it worked maybe 4x then all i got was 2 error codes either bad connection or bad battery like an error code e04 or f04. Even on batterys i knew was good the dam thing still showed these error codes.."Total piece of crap" Best to stick to non computerized models of battery chargers in my opinion.
Good charger, useless Starter January 28, 2010 K. Marsh (Baltimore, MD United States) If you look carefully at the two graphics on Amazon, you'll see that the lower one shows a yellow stripe advertising 75A Starting. However the product description text does not mention Starting. I don't know if that feature was eliminated or just de-emphasized, but it is just as well.
I have the earlier model with the yellow stripe. The 75 Amp starting feature DOES NOT WORK. When I have a battery that just barely turns the engine over, but not fast enough to start it, the 75 Amp start feature on my VEC1095ABD does nothing to help. Nothing.
I still like this charger a lot, though. I can leave it hooked up to a tractor battery all Winter, and it will run once or twice a day to keep it topped off, without hurting it. It does not "float" a charge, but simply turns on occasionally. The fan does not run except when it charges. Come Spring the engine starts right up.
My B&D charger keeps going two tractor batteries, an AGM and two inverter duty emergency deep cycle an AGM batteries thanks to the reliability of constellation energy, and two auto batteries. Currently all my batteries except one of the automobiles are 3 to five years old, yet all are in tip-top shape, thanks to this charger, distilled water and sensible care. Keep your batteries clean, fully charged, and (for the wet cells) at a proper fluid level, and they will give you good service of 5 or more years.
The charger always starts in "Gel" mode because that is the most easily damaged battery type, which needs to be both voltage and current limited. The AGM mode limits peak voltage but still charges safely at the full rated amperage, thanks to the high frequency power converter design. Of course, wet cells like to be charged as fast as possible, and the 25 Amp rating, while well below what your auto Alternator charges at, does recover discharged batteries quickly.
If you can overlook the lack of a Starting feature, I recommend the Black & Decker 25/10/2 Amp Battery Charger.
