Amazon.com Product Description
The Schumacher SC-6500A SpeedCharge Automatic Battery Charger is part of the "SpeedCharge" line of chargers, the state of the art in battery charging technology. An internal computer controls the charge rate while monitoring the battery condition to insure the battery is not overcharged. With SC-6500A electronic technology, you can hook up the battery, set the controls, and walk away. Your battery will be fully charged in a fraction of the time required by conventional chargers. When the computer control determines that the battery is fully charged, the charger is shut off completely. The SC-6500A SpeedCharge is an automatic battery charger for 12V, deep cycle, gel cell, and AGM batteries.

The SC-6500A monitors itself to prevent overcharging your battery.
Versatile
The SC-6500A will charge batteries for a wide variety of vehicles, including cars, trucks, RVs, deep cycles, farm equipment, motorcycles, and lawn tractors. With this charger, you can charge virtually every type of automotive or light marine battery.

Features
Among its many features, the SC-6500A has a 65 Amp Engine Start for emergency starting and a 10/20 Amp Fast Charge mode, which is a self-adjusting, variable charge rate for everyday charging needs and maintaining your battery in peak condition. While the unit charges, it automatically desulfates and restores the battery. There is also a 2 Amp Slow Charge setting for charging and maintaining small batteries such as motorcycle, ATV, snowmobile, and lawn tractor batteries.

Safe and Convenient
This unit has 125 amp, sure-grip clamps for top and side-mounted battery posts, an electronic touchpad control, easy-to-select switches for the digital display, battery type or charge/start functions. Choose from 12 volt regular automotive, 12 volt deep-cycle, 12 volt AGM, or gel cell batteries. Meanwhile, a built-in digital voltmeter/tester helps diagnose problems.

The SC-6500A has a black and gray polypropylene case with a retractable handle, as well as push button controls to select and display charge rates (65 Amp engine start, 20/10 Amp, 2 Amp) and battery type. There is also a retractable handle for easy portability and a cord wrap on back.

Warranty
Every Schumacher power source comes with a one-year limited warranty (90 days on battery).

5 out of 5 stars Great Charger!   June 27, 2010

I love the different displays. You can display it by battery percentage, voltage, etc. A lot better than the other ones I've used. Won't overcharge the battery either.

5 out of 5 stars Works easier than advertised   November 4, 2009

I've only had this unit for about a month but use it nearly every day to charge storage batteries and solar power batteries if the sun isn't doing it's job well enough.

To jump through all the hype, all you need to do is connect the charger's clamps, select your battery type (regular, deep cycle, agm/gel), select the charge range, which determines the initial voltage, (small battery, regular battery, engine start) and that's it.

The size, in standard terms, is about 9-inches square and 5-inches tall... in case you aren't able to convert from metric (listed in the ad).

The digital display shows the charging voltage at the clamps but you can toggle the push-button to display the percent charge of the battery, or the percent output of your alternator if you are testing that. It's real handy to check on the battery percent charge to see how charging is going... I get antsy after a while and like to know where I stand on the charge... it's a guy thing I guess.

I have two other Schumacher chargers, all smaller capacity, but I like the automatic functions of this one, and the display takes the guesswork out of your charging progress.

When you purchase a battery charger, what does that mean? You have a dead battery. Right? This charger will not work if your battery is dead. There is a feature built in that will not allow it to recognize a battery with 0 charge. If I had a low battery, I could probably get it to start anyway. If you want to spend $100 for a batter charger that will not charge a dead battery, this is the product for you.
Thank God Amazon has wonderful customer service. They are giving me a full refund and paying for the return shipping.

2 out of 5 stars Worked for around 20 charges   August 19, 2009

This charger used to work great. The cord storage lugs fell off the first day but that did not affect how the unit charged so I just assumed this was 21st century design quality. However, after about 20 charges the charger ceased to sense the battery state during a charge. Of course, no feedback means no control. The charger continues to display whatever the initial charge state and continues to charge. Turn the charger off and the battery sense will eventually display the battery state. So I thought I would take advantage of the stated 5 year warranty and send it in to Schumacher for repair. OOPS! Forgot about 21st century responsibility. Schumacher requires the purchaser to send it the registration card to 'activate' the warranty. Since I did not and will not adhere to this ridiculous concept of you can pay for the product but you've got to pay for the stamp to get the warranty, the manufacture has managed to wriggle out of their responsibility to design a true 5 year life product. So, I'm shopping for any brand of charger which is NOT made by Schumacher and when I buy it, I'll buy a stamp and send them a copy of the receipt.

4 out of 5 stars Gets the job done!   February 17, 2009

Great to keep in the garage. Works just like it says it will. Used it to jump a car battery zapped by extreme winter temps...did it within five minutes. The only downfall is that the electrical cord is very short. If I had to do it over again for convenience sake, I may have went with something that held a charge so that it could be taken with you/and you didn't have to carry an extension cord at all times. Still worth having though!
